Lyme Disease is an infection by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi
transmitted through the bite of a tick. If diagnosed early, treatment with antibiotic
is highly successful. Diagnosed late, chronic Lyme infection can result in long-term
debilitating arthritis, heart problems, and abnormalities of the nervous system.
Lyme Disease is the fastest growing vector-borne disease in the United States.
There was a 41% increase in the number of reported cases from 2001 to 2002.
The threat continues to grow. Funding is desperately needed to further the development
of more effective treatment and, ultimately, a cure. For information, please
